"This company is so thorough and upfront about everything. We had a roach issue after our gutters were cleaned and they came in and inspected the situation in detail and then promptly fixed the issue with treatment that was non toxic for my pets and toddler. We have not seen roaches since! We definitely recommend them, their prices are amazing too!"

"I was having issues with some roaches and was recommended Optimal through a co worker. Not only did Marcus from Optimal help me get rid of the roach infestation, but he also did a full house inspection and even helped me with some wasp nests around the house. Great customer service and gave me tips on how to keep the pests away! Can’t recommend Optimal enough!!"
"This is the second time I've hired Marcus at Optimal Termite & Pest Control, and once again, I’m extremely satisfied with the service. The first time was to treat a roach problem before moving into my new home; the second time to address persistent cricket activity that had become a nuisance. On both occasions, his professionalism stood out immediately. He arrived on time, worked efficiently and completed the job quickly and thoroughly. At the same time, he answered all my questions without rushing. No wasted time, no upselling, just honest, efficient work. I wouldn’t hesitate to call him again or recommend him to anyone looking for reliable pest control."

"Marcus was super helpful while helping with cockroach extermination at our rental house! He was very responsive, answered the phone quickly, and scheduled our appointment within 24 hours. Also loved that we did not have to commit to a monthly service (since this is a rental house, we felt a one time treatment would suffice). Highly recommend!"

Local German Cockroach Treatments in RVA With a 3 Service Elimination Plan
German cockroach extermination in Richmond, VA requires a very different approach than treating the larger outdoor roaches that occasionally wander inside. German cockroaches live and reproduce indoors and are usually introduced through infested apartments, homes, boxes, appliances, furniture, or other belongings. They are especially common in apartments, duplexes, condos, and rental properties, where they can also move between connected units through plumbing and wall voids. German cockroaches are one of the most serious indoor infestations we treat because of how quickly they reproduce and how deeply they hide. These small, light-brown roaches have two dark stripes behind the head and are highly thigmotactic, meaning they prefer tight spaces where their bodies stay in contact with surrounding surfaces. A female can carry an egg capsule containing roughly 30–40 young, allowing a small introduction to become a widespread infestation within months. As populations grow, roaches can contaminate food and surfaces with bacteria, including organisms such as E. coli and Salmonella, while their droppings, saliva, and shed body parts can trigger allergies and worsen asthma in sensitive people. Optimal Termite & Pest Control uses detailed inspections, professional baits, non-repellent treatments, and scheduled follow-up service to eliminate German cockroach infestations throughout Richmond and the surrounding RVA area. With 14+ years of hands-on experience and direct owner involvement on every job, the treatment is built around how far the infestation has spread and where the roaches are actually harboring.

Where German Roaches Hide and How Infestations Spread
German cockroach infestations can begin with one pregnant female being carried into the home. A female typically produces an egg capsule containing around 30–40 young and carries it with her until shortly before they hatch. Under favorable indoor conditions, those nymphs can mature into reproducing adults in roughly two months. A single female can produce several egg capsules during her lifetime, allowing multiple generations to overlap inside the home.
Kitchens: Ground Zero
The kitchen is usually ground zero for a German cockroach infestation and where activity found elsewhere in the home often starts. It can take only one mated female to introduce enough offspring for a serious infestation to develop within a matter of months. Kitchens give German roaches nearly everything they need in one place: food, grease, water, warmth, and countless tight spaces to hide.
Refrigerators are one of the biggest trouble spots we find. The compressor and motor area gives off steady heat, which can support extremely heavy activity behind and underneath the unit. Sinks, dishwashers, cooking grease, food debris, and moisture around plumbing add even more favorable conditions. Once the population grows, German roaches begin spreading through cabinets, appliances, wall voids, and eventually into other rooms of the home.
Common kitchen hiding spots include:
Behind and underneath refrigerators, especially around the compressor and motor
Inside refrigerator compartments and around door gaskets
Behind dishwashers, stoves, and other warm appliances
Inside or underneath toasters, coffee makers, microwaves, and other small appliances
Cabinet hinges and hardware
Drawer tracks and rails
Gaps between the backs of cabinets and the drywall
Plastic corner braces and tight joints inside cabinetry
Electrical outlet and switch covers
Digital appliance displays and control panels
Behind wall decorations
Underneath kitchen tables and chairs
German cockroaches are especially drawn to warm, protected spaces, which is why an infestation can be much larger than what you see walking across a countertop. A proper inspection means looking well beyond the obvious areas and checking the small cracks, hardware, appliances, and voids where the population is actually living.
Bathrooms
Bathrooms are often one of the first areas German cockroaches move into after becoming established in the kitchen. The constant moisture from sinks, toilets, showers, and plumbing makes bathrooms an easy place for them to survive, especially when the infestation is starting to spread through the home.
Common bathroom hiding spots include:
Inside vanity cabinets and around cabinet hardware
Behind mirrors and medicine cabinets
Around sink and toilet plumbing penetrations
Inside wall voids near plumbing
Around bathroom door frames and hinges
Behind trim, baseboards, and other tight gaps
Around warm, humid areas near showers and tubs
The hiding places are similar to what we find in kitchens, but the moisture source is usually more concentrated. Once German roaches start showing up in bathrooms, it often means the infestation is no longer limited to one area of the home.
Once German cockroaches start turning up in bedrooms, living rooms, or offices, they’ve usually been in the home for a while. You may only notice one or two, but activity this far from the kitchen or bathroom is often a sign that the infestation is much more established than it looks.
Common hiding spots include:
End tables and furniture around couches
Inside couch and upholstered furniture framing
Behind picture frames and wall decorations
Around decorative items and objects sitting on shelves
Inside entertainment centers and electronics
Inside Xboxes, PlayStations, and other warm electronics
Around window frames and curtain or blind hardware
In small gaps, seams, and protected areas around furniture
At this stage, the treatment has to go well beyond the obvious areas. German cockroaches will use tight, warm hiding places throughout the room, so the inspection needs to follow that activity into furniture, electronics, wall-mounted items, and other protected spaces.
German cockroaches can spread into utility and mechanical areas, especially rooms with water heaters, electrical panels, plumbing, or other wall penetrations. Activity in these spaces is usually much lower than what we find in kitchens or bathrooms because there is typically less food and fewer ideal harborages.
Common utility-area hiding spots include:
Around doors, door frames, and hinges
Inside or behind metal and wood shelving
In gaps where shelving meets the wall
Around wiring, cables, and plumbing penetrations
Behind electrical panels and other protected wall-mounted equipment
In cracks and voids around water heaters and other mechanical equipment
When we find heavy German cockroach activity in a utility area, it usually tells us the infestation has become much more widespread. At that point, the roaches are no longer staying close to the main food and moisture sources and have begun occupying secondary areas throughout the structure.

Inspection
A German cockroach inspection tells us much more than where roaches have been seen. We look for every stage of the life cycle like egg capsules, newly hatched nymphs, juveniles, adults, fecal spotting, and active harborages. The amount and mix of activity found in the kitchen can often tell us how established the infestation is throughout the rest of the home. We also look at how close secondary activity is to the kitchen. Roaches in a nearby bathroom or utility room tell us one thing; activity in bedrooms, living rooms, furniture, or electronics tells us the infestation has spread much farther. With 14+ years of hands-on experience, we can usually determine the severity and likely spread of the infestation quickly and build the treatment around what we find.
Proper preparation gives us access to the areas German cockroaches use most and helps the treatment work as intended. Cabinets, pantries, and vanities should be emptied, floors cleared, clutter and trash removed, and furniture moved away from walls where possible. We provide clear prep instructions in English or Spanish before service.
Before treatment:
Empty cabinets, pantries, and vanities
Clear floors and remove clutter
Move furniture away from walls where possible
Remove birds, reptiles, and other pets from treated areas
Cover aquariums and follow any filter or air-pump instructions
Plan to leave the home for at least 4 hours
Anyone with significant health concerns should consider staying out for up to 8 hours and consult their physician if needed
The goal is simple: give us clear access to the cracks, cabinetry, appliances, plumbing areas, and other harborages that need to be treated thoroughly.

Follow Up Services
Treatment is based on the severity and locations identified during the inspection. We use a combination of Advion WDG, Tekko Pro IGR, Phantom II, and Advion Roach Gel Bait in cabinets, vanities, appliance areas, cracks, crevices, and other active harborages. Heavy infestations may also require Gentrol Point Sources and Delta Dust in wall voids and other protected areas. Each product serves a different purpose. Residual treatments target active roaches, growth regulators interfere with development and reproduction, gel baits reach hidden populations, and crack-and-crevice or wall-void treatments help us reach activity deeper inside the structure.
German cockroach extermination takes follow-through. Our normal schedule is an initial treatment, a follow-up about 2 weeks later, and a final follow-up about 1 month after that.At each return visit, we look at how the population has changed—whether adults have disappeared, how many nymphs remain, where activity is still concentrated, and whether secondary areas are still producing roaches. Most moderate to fairly heavy infestations are resolved within these three visits when preparation instructions are followed. Severe or unusually widespread infestations may require additional service, which we explain based on what we find during the initial inspection.
Preparation & Safety Notes

German cockroach cleanouts are built around the severity and spread of the infestation. Before treatment begins, we determine how far activity has moved beyond the kitchen and identify the appliances, cabinets, wall voids, furniture, and other harborages that need attention. From there, we use a combination of professional residual treatments, growth regulators, gel baits, crack-and-crevice applications, and wall-void treatments when needed. Most infestations are handled with an initial cleanout followed by two scheduled follow-ups, but heavier infestations may require additional service based on what we find during the first visit.
How We Eliminate German Roach Infestations
What to Expect After Your First German Roach Treatment Service
After the first German cockroach treatment, we typically see an 80–90% reduction in roach activity. Many of our customers have reported waking up the next morning to find dead roaches throughout their kitchens and bathrooms. It's one of the most noticeable signs that the treatment is working. However, German cockroach infestations generally require three service visits for complete elimination. You may still see some live roaches between treatments, but activity should continue to decrease as we get closer to eliminating the infestation. It's important to avoid wiping down treated areas inside cabinets or mopping treated floors until we advise it's safe to do so, as this can remove the products needed for lasting control. All major cleaning should be completed before your first treatment. Following these recommendations helps us achieve the best possible results.
